Went for a walk today. The birds in the barren trees of winter singing brought me joy. Soon after, I came upon a little squirrel in the middle of the street. Clearly this death was fresh. Before I could take another step, I witnessed a beautiful sight. An act of God. Compassion. His power makes events like this unfold.
It was another squirrel, a tiny, little life in the wild, to display His power and love. This companion, friend, eased it’s way out to the middle of the street to see what had happened. Very near, now, the squirrel remained in a fixed state, peering, pondering, directly at the friend. What has happened? Are you okay?
Soon a vehicle came charging down, the driver saw me in the street peering at the scene, and continued full force, until, I stood up taller and waved mightily for him to see. I wanted to save that other squirrel. I wish I could have given him a bit more time to say good-bye. Thankfully my gestures were productive, and the driver swayed to the side and went around. I smiled as he drove on. He grinned. “It’s just a squirrel” Not just a squirrel, but a tiny, significant piece of God’s creation, that he would use to show the compassionate, powerful, loving God He is. What a beautiful experience.
This little squirrel scurried to safety and even looked back. Maybe even went back again to check? I do not know. I have never witnessed anything like this, and I am thankful I walked down this path today.
“look to the animals they will teach you” Job 12:7
No matter how big or small the difficulties we face, none is insignificant or small in the eyes of a compassionate God. If God can show compassion from one squirrel to another, how much more should the soul that has been transformed by Him, filled with the compassion of the suffering servant, minister such care and concern one to another.
GROW IN THE GRACE AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE SAVIOR
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion.. Be kind and compassionate to one another…Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Blessed be the Father of mercies God of all comfort who comforts us, that we may be able to comfort another.” Col 3. Romans 12:15. 2 Cor. 1:3-5
Hey everybody! Little side note. The photo displayed here is the actual squirrel Leah is referring to.
I wish we could know somehow, if he is a relative or just a friend.
I Love Squirrels!!
