I struggled a lot in school. So when I was called by God to teach my kids, I really felt inadequate. Even more so with “special” neurological challenges for our firstborn son. Soon, through even the extremely painful, hard stuff, I began to find such immense joy, well for a lot of reasons, but a couple: First, because I was blessed to teach them the BIBLE as their core book to learn from. It has been our foundation. Second, because I became excited about learning in a way I never was given the freedom to do-and I was learning while I was also teaching them. Character, bible, truth, life, freedom in Christ taught to them, enhanced to greater in my own life.

The joy of learning has been ignited in myself, as well as them. Something I never knew was possible. The story is not over. Until I meet Jesus. But Today, in spite of so many hurdles we faced on these past 18 years of raising our sons, and then seeing God’s victorious hand in every day- I thoroughly enjoyed in depth study as I watched them study the in and outs of Patriotism, The Constitutional Convention of 1787. I immensely enjoyed this:

Benjamin Franklin’s Plea for Prayer

It was during the quarreling and heated debating on June 28 that 81-year-old Benjamin Franklin made his famous plea for prayer. Said he:

“In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for divine protection. Our prayers, sir, were heard; and THEY WERE GRACIOUSLY answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence in our favor. To that kind Providence we owe this happy opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And HAVE WE NOW FORGOTTEN THAT POWERFUL FRIEND? OR DO WE IMAGINE THAT WE NO LONGER NEED HIS ASSISTANCE? “I have lived, sir, a long time; and the longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth — that GOD GOVERNS IN THE AFFAIRS OF MEN. And IF A SPARROW CANNOT FALL TO THE GROUND WITHOUT HIS NOTICE, IS IT PROBABLE THAT AN EMPIRE CAN RISE WITHOUT HIS AID? WE HAVE BEEN ASSURED, sir, IN THE SACRED WRITINGS, that ‘EXCEPT THE LORD BUILD THE HOUSE THEY LABOR IN VAIN THAT BUILD IT” ” I firmly believe this; and I also believe that WITHOUT His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel; we shall be divided by our little partial, local interests, our projects will be confounded and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a byword down to future ages. AND WHAT IS WORSE, MANKIND, HEREAFTER, FROM this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing government by human wisdom and leave it to chance, war, or conquest. “I, therefore, beg leave to move: “That hereafter prayers, IMPLORING THE ASSISTANCE OF HEAVEN and its blessing on our deliberations, be held in this assembly every morning before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the clergy of this city be requested to officiate in that service.” ~Benjamin Franklin

This plea affected good and change. It was considered a miracle because it took men’s stubborn self focused hearts, and with a better and proper refocus on God and not self. It brought the delegates together in greater determination and harmony. There was victory.

“The Designer of freedom often lets His children struggle till they have exhausted themselves and nearly every possibility before He seems to say they are now ready to receive and appreciate the answer. And so it was in the Convention of 1787”

And so it is, as I recall my own acknowledgment of my human sinfulness, weakness, that the Foundation of Christ, I stand in His power, and the blood that purchased my Salvation and freedom. I stand on this SOLID ROCK and say… whatever we are called to do, no matter how impossible, how difficult, how painful, as we Remain in Him, standing in His power, He gives victory. He gives life, freedom. God wins. Trust in HIM.

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.” Act. 4:13

I compare these happenings of our beginning, FOUNDATIONS of our NATION – and compare how far away this NATION has turned from GOD. I pray, we pray, and we look to Christ, and the joy of knowing Him, no matter what happens, in good and bad, the Faithful WILL SEE the PROMISED LAND and live in peace, life, freedom, for all eternity.

IN GOD WE TRUST – God has a plan for His children. I marvel that this very study, was not my plan, but God’s. Our very little curriculum I ordered, is taking snail pace of a life time to arrive. In this need for something to teach them, the Lord provided this unit study, perfect for this time. It’s really a wonder of wonders to submit our plans to God, follow His lead, and see Him accomplish His purpose for His glory.
